ICT - Information and Communication Technologies

.

Information and Communications Technology (ICT) has never had a higher focus that at the present time.  The Government has made the integration of ICT into all teaching and learning one of its key priorities.

Students will be technology-smart and the use of technology will be an integral part of the teaching and learning program.  (Plan for Government Schools 2004-2007).                 The school has invested heavily in hardware to ensure that all students have access to ICT and the Department will continue to make funding available for teachers to continue with ICT training.  Gidgegannup Primary School promotes the use and integration of ICT across all learning areas.

Teachers provide opportunities for all students to use ICT by designing a range of student centred strategies which engage learners in ICT enriched, multidisciplinary learning programs.  These programs offer students an opportunity to work both online and offline with a diverse range of applications.

Some interesting and educational ICT strategies include:

  • Intranet access and research

  • Enquiry based approach to Internet research

  • Web Quests - Enriched learning tasks

  • Web based learning

  • Web Page development and design

  • Student centred learning software (eg. Spelling, Reading, etc)

  • Multimedia (including digital cameras, video, CD, etc)

  • Use Microsoft Office applications such as PowerPoint for presentations, Word for story writing, Publisher for publications...

ICT can support and enhance many aspects of literacy and numeracy.  Like it or not, ICT will become a significant influence of your child’s experience in learning.  ICT can be a very valuable way of presenting and manipulating conventional texts.  Its greatest potential, is in presenting texts, which could not be accessed in traditional paper formats.

Using the Internet at home.

Keep the Internet public.  The learning benefits that the Internet offers are too many to mention.  But like any public domain, student access must be supervised.  Choose an open area to put the computer in.  Establish ground rules on its use.  Tell your children what to do if something makes them feel uncomfortable.  Tell them to never disclose their real name and contact details (or those of their friends) to anyone they don’t know.  Ask your child to share their work with you.  You can learn a lot from them.
